Wine Review October 2011 - Château Massamier La Mignarde, Pépieux

The Château Massamier La Mignarde is a wine domaine with 70 hectares of vines situated at the foot of the Montagne Noire in the Minervois appellation of Languedoc-Roussillon.

Roman soldiers of the Maximus legion set up camp in a field which they called Maximiana which gave it its name of Massamier today.

The owners, M and Mrs. Jacques Vènes, are passionate about wine and have devoted themselves to researching and developing its quality.

The land around the Château is diverse and allows them to grow different varieties of grapes that prefer different types of soil and environments. On the poor soils of the hillocks made of sandstone and limestone the Mediterranean vines of Cinsault and Grenache thrive. On the ancient terraces of alluvial soil the cépages of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan are most at home.

Over the years they have scooped many awards, most notably for the red Domus Maximus voted among the world's finest. The wine (AOC Minervois La Livinière) is 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache. The grapes are picked by hand and matured in new barrels producing a dense wine of deep colour with the flavours of very ripe red fruits.

Visit their website to find out more, or better still, visit the domaine for a tasting and try their wines for yourself.
