Château de Cazeneuve

Chateau Cazeneuve

The 17th Century winery of Château de Cazeneuve is one of the best estates in Pic Saint Loup, especially renowned for its elegant red wines. With an average price of 12€, this is an exceptional award winning organic wine within an acceptable budget.

Château de Cazeneuve is located in Lauret, situated in a natural amphitheater north of Montpellier, in the appellation Pic Saint Loup. It is one of the oldest farms still operating in the region, dating back to the 9th century. André Leenhardt is the passionate owner and winemaker of Chateau de Cazeneuve since 1987 and has been instrumental in the qualitative revolution that resulted in the AOC Pic Saint Loup. When he acquired the property he ripped up the 45 hectares of vineyards and replanted with key varietals that would grow best in terms of soil and aspect of the domaine, surrounded by the garrigue that smells deliciously of rosemary, thyme, and pine.

The entire vineyard is classified under Pic Saint Loup appellation with 45 hectares being completely organic. André has turned the domaine into one of the most famous in the region. The wines produced here are the reflection of a unique climate bathed in the Mediterranean sun and swept by cool winds which provides a stunning balance.

Their goal is to make Pic Saint Loup wines with a strong identity at every step of the process from the vines to the barrel. Organic methods have been used in the vineyard and the cellar since 2006 and André received his organic certification in 2010.

The grape varieties used in the red wines are Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault and in the white wines Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino and Viognier.

Harvesting is done exclusively by hand, collecting the grapes in boxes. The winery uses modern methods of vinification that focus primarily on quality with as little interference with the natural process as possible. The wines are pulled together at the end of winter and left to mature in modern tanks or oak barrels in a climate controlled barn that is subterranean.

Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan are the most common red grape varieties used producing wines that are full bodied with concentrated ripe black fruit, and flavors include cranberry, violet, liquorice, and with maturity smoke aromas as well as black pepper. The color is deep purple black with ripe fruit and firm tannins. Earthy yet with a certain finesse.
