Peter and Katie Lawton have a shared love of France, and as neither of them particularly wanted to live in the other’s country (England/South Africa) they decided to settle in France. They chose this south western part of the country as it is still unspoiled, has plenty of wild life, big skies, wonderful mountains and fresh air, and yet is easily accessible due to its proximity to a couple of airports and motorways. “We both love nature and old buildings so this abbey fitted the bill exactly”, says Katie.

Originally an ancient Benedictine monastery dating back to the tenth century, Peter and Katie bought the property in 2005. Katie says “It was in very good condition, it just needed some love and attention - and loads of furniture of course!”

With Peter’s 25 years of hotel experience and Katie’s eye for design having been an interior decorator, they set about creating a luxury Chambres d'Hôtes.

Located in the beautiful village of Camon, it is a short drive from the medieval town of Mirepoix and half an hour from the city of Carcassonne with plenty of things to see and do in the area. It is surrounded by forest and pasture and the elevated position of the château affords stunning views over the surrounding countryside, the landscaped gardens and the lovely swimming pool.

The château has been beautifully decorated with excellent taste and style. Each of the five bedrooms, the family suite and the apartment (which sleeps 6 - 8 people) has an individual character.

Open from 1st April until 31st October, it is a beautiful venue for weddings, anniversaries and birthday parties. They can cater for up to 70 people in the cloisters, 20 in the dining room and up to 25 in the Old Monks kitchen with its more informal and rustic ambiance. The château is available for exclusive use throughout the year with packages for weekends, mid-week or even winter breaks. During the winter months when life is a little less hectic, Peter and Katie take advantage of some well earned time out with family and friends (in between gardening, painting, and general maintenance in preparation for the next season).

The restaurant is open in the evenings where you can dine in the wonderfully atmospheric cloisters in the summer or the intimate dining room in the cooler months. The ‘tasting’ menu of five courses comes highly recommended, as is everything, prepared by their chef using local and seasonal ingredients.

This year it has been voted as one of the 'Top Five Castle Hotels in France' by the Huffington Post and voted in the Tatler Travel Guide as one of the 101 best hotels in the world.

It’s really easy to find as it is well sign-posted but be sure to book in advance and check opening times as the château does tend to be used frequently for weddings and other special occasions.
